The F Word Matters, For Your Dog Too!

9d50433df7d49b919e19dc998f12bebfBy F word, we’re talking F-I-T. If you live in that part of the world where seasons can take a sharp turn downward, don’t let the colder months take you and your pet by surprise! Get outside, keep fido moving and make fitness part of your regular routine.

Did you know that many of the medical and physical conditions associated with overweight or obese pets mirror those suffered by overweight or obese humans? For fido, even just an extra five pounds can put them at risk for these disorders:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Respiratory and heart disease
  • Osteoarthritis and joint problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Kidney disease
  • Cancer, particularly intra-abdominal cancers
  • Shortened life span

7b3754346a7e86090143ec8560a58f43Don’t let chubby puppy creep in – avoid giving your sweet  little furry friends rich fatty treats. The ‘diet’ part of the fitness equation includes portion control. Often, pet obesity is a people issue, not a pet issue. Be aware of the quality of food you’re feeding your pet.

Many would agree that both exercise AND diet will keep your little bundle of love fit, trim and healthy.

Happy FALL!

Autumn Is A Fun Time Of The Year, Keep Dog Safety In Mind.

3b849d41ee0a123c1ba77868800ae5d3Autumn is a busy and fun time of the year for many of us with kids being back at school, Halloween around the corner and plenty of other autumn activities happening everywhere.

Don’t forget your dog’s safety during this season, here are few tips to keep in mind:

  • Remember to keep fido warm! Shorter haired dogs should wear coats or sweaters and longer haired dogs shouldn’t be shaved down to the skin.
  • Mushrooms are popping up, keep your pets away from them! Fall is mushroom season, and while 99% are not toxic, 1% are. 779fca0128fa8d751d673a026bce662e
  • Oh no, snakes! Snakes prepare to hibernate in the fall so stay clear, they’re not in the best of moods!
  • Keep school supplies tucked away! Crayons, glue sticks, pencils and magic markers are toxic, be sure to keep them tucked away!

Happy (almost) autumn!

Host The Ultimate Pet Paw-ty For Your Furry Friends!

4f49afdd729bcb0388f013ea7f2ddfbfSummers are fun AND the perfect time to celebrate just about anything! If you’re someone who enjoys planning parties and casual soirees with friends and family, why not let pets be in on the fun too?

Planning and prepping a PAW-TY can be done (almost) lickety-split.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Let the waterworks begin! Grab a kid’s pool and let all of those four legged beasts in! Remember to always keep an eye on your pets and ensure that proper safety practices are in place.
  • 8496270d22cac00dec87330d1e6058faDoggie loot bags are always great fun! You can include healthy treats and toys that are safe to play with.
  • If you have a big yard, provide some space for pets to run! Leaves time for a little chit chatting amongst the grown up humans.

Remember to always have fun. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Summertime = Dogtime – Keep Your Pets Safe This Summer!

tumblr_inline_npfi3oTfZe1s70klf_500Keep your pets safe and cool this summer. Things are heating up, and remember that a parked car can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, you’re looking at closer to 120 degrees. Don’t leave your pets inside cars even for just a few minutes, your pet will suffer irreversible organ damage and/or die.

When it comes to exercise, you may want to limit the amount on hot days as well as adjust intensity and duration. Early morning or evening hours are the best times to get out there. Asphalt gets hot and can burn your pet’s paws. Walking on grass is best, if possible, and always remember to carry water with you.

9af57ac19acdd95a3b5f07be45758be5If you’re planning a picnic or play date outdoors with your pet, make sure there are shaded areas with unobstructed air flow – trees and tarps are ideal for this and please make sure your pet is protected from the sun.

Pools are F-U-N but keep pet safety front and centre!

Here are a few things to remember when it comes to pools and your pet:

  • Not all dogs are good swimmers. Some breeds can even drown if left unsupervised around a pool.
  • Teach your dog to swim.
  • Invest in a dog life vest.
  • Take care with older and senior dogs – they are more likely to suffer from arthritis, vision loss, seizures and a host of other health issues that may require special attention around the pool or prohibit them from swimming altogether.
  • Learn dog CPR. Please click HERE for how to give your dog CPR.
  • Consider fencing your pool.

Which Type Of Dog Is Best For Me? Puppy Or Adult Dog?

230fd3c499b75768bbeae3ad4cc7f4f2Let’s face it, puppies are adorable and when deciding to bring a pet into your life, seeing puppies melts even the toughest of hearts. Having to choose between getting a puppy vs an adult OR senior dog can be difficult because each have their pros and cons.

When considering a puppy, the advantages are obvious – they’re adorable, sweet, cuddly, and training them from the get-go can be a lot of fun. However, choosing an already trained adult dog definitely has its advantages.

Here are few things to consider when choosing between getting a puppy vs an adult dog:

  • Puppies are work and lots of patience is highly required during the potty training phase. Expect 3 a.m. outings outdoors, long walks daily and endless hours of play. With these things in mind, the end result is worth every second you spend with your little pup!
  • 291251d66d00565120d1f966513e91caPuppies are a great introduction into homes with young kids OR energetic family environments where there’s a lot of available play time.
  • A grown up dog is a perfect choice for situations where low key adults or retirees want love and companionship and really don’t have the energy for a young puppy.
  • Rescue dogs are also a wonderful way to go. Why not give a rescue dog a second chance? Many come from broken homes or abusive environments. With just the right amount of patience, will and care, your little rescue pet could easily become quite the little gem!

026ddfa5998c7ddddf56e970223b3c88Any way you slice it, dog ownership is work but worth every single second of invested time.

Weigh out the pros and cons and remember to enjoy and have fun with your pet(s)!

TOP 5 Reasons Why Dogs Are Good For Your Health!

59b3bdce316193464da732e13cd9be67Owning a pet can be a life changer. The relationship that develops between a dog and its owner grows and develops as years go by. We can learn a lot from dogs such as loyalty, friendship and how to take care  of ourselves and others. Just like humans, dogs feel emotion. Their loyalty, intelligence, devotion and affection are incredibly rewarding and for dog owners, nothing could be more enjoyable than a long walk in fresh air with our pets or relaxing at home in each other’s company.

Screen Shot 2015-04-06 at 4.58.45 PMOwning a dog can be great for your health. Here are 5 reasons why:

  • You spend more time outdoors. This forces most us to get away from our devices, computers and TVs and get outside enjoying long walks and runs with our furry pals.
  • You become more social. If you’re feeling a little isolated, getting out talking and meeting other dog owners is a rewarding and refreshing experience.
  • Learn to relax. If yoga or meditation isn’t exactly your thing, being with your dog during downtime can relax the noggin’ and stimulate calmness.
  • Practice patience. If patience isn’t your forte, playing with your dog or teaching them tricks is a lesson in patience. Try it, the rewards are endless.
  • Become physically fit. If the gym or busy fitness outlets turn you completely off, running or taking brisk walks with your dog can get you (and fido) into shape in no time!

Screen Shot 2015-04-06 at 4.59.16 PMIt’s spring! Get outside and enjoy that springtime air!
